true wellness begins with
ancient knowledge
Ayurveda means, quite literally, the “science of life.” Despite the fact that it is thousands of years old, Ayurveda continues to be one of the world’s most sophisticated and powerful mind-body wellness systems. Much more than a system for treating or avoiding illness, Ayurveda offers a body of wisdom designed to help humans remain vibrant and healthy throughout their lives.
As its meaning suggests, Ayurveda views health as much more than the absence of disease. Health, from an Ayurvedic perspective, is defined as a gracious, tranquil, content, joyous, bright, and clear state of the body, senses, mind, and spirit.
The Sanskrit word for health, svastha, is a state in which the mind, soul, and senses interact harmoniously to experience a feeling of Self, wellness, and even bliss. Achieving this may seem like a lofty goal, but Ayurveda provides a treasure chest of elegant and insightful tools to help us get there.

What sets Ayurveda apart from other wellness and healing systems is the knowledge that health is not "one size fits all." Each person has a constitutional balance that is specific to him or her. Movement away from that balance creates dis-ease in the body. If imbalances are left unchecked, disease may develop. The early signs of imbalance serve as a wakeup call to make gentle and natural shifts in behavior to return to balance. Understanding our unique constitution and learning to recognize imbalance is part of our work in Body Wisdom.
